Curvy Girl Style – January’s Hits and Misses

Happy Tuesday to everyone! As we race toward the end of this month I am amazed as always, on how fast time really flies. It seems like just yesterday I was celebrating New Years with the family and today I’m thinking about homecoming next week and Valentines Day. I wanted to take a moment and share my absolute favorite hair and makeup products this month, and a few that may not have lived up to the hype. I do want to stipulate I am not paid for any opinions I have, they are just that.

We have been extra dry out here in Northern CA, our running theme – aside from “Please let it rain soon!” – has been moisturize, moisturize, moisturize.

1. fuzzy socks – Ok I know it sounds strange to have socks in a beauty blog – but hear me out. It’s really cold in our house at night, so I’ve taken to wearing socks to bed – the fuzzy ones don’t bind as much as regular socks and to me they feel warmer that regular socks. Rub a little coconut on your feet before you put them on and turn in for the night and you’ve got yourself a great combination for soft moisturized feet in the morning. Which leads me to……

2. coconut oil – I’ve said it before and I will say it again, and again to anyone that will listen – Coconut oil is awesome! My Girlfriend turned me on to it almost 10 years ago, and not a day goes by that I don’t use it for something, in something, on something, you name I’ve tried to use coconut oil for it – it’s my version of Windex from “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” – This time of year there is a jar in the bathroom, one by my bed, one for each of the girls, and one in the kitchen (because you don’t want to mix that – lol). I use it as a second daily moisturizer after I put on my hope in a jar – night cream. I rub it into my cuticles and on my elbows and knees, I rub it on my husbands head after he cuts his hair and shaves his face, I’ve even used is as a deodorant and after a few health hiccups this winter may go back. It is truly a great oil.

3. Alterna BambooRehab deep hydration masque – I had been using coconut oil as a mask twice a month for a long time, to deep condition my hair, but it can be messy and a real pain to wash out of your hair. Sometimes I think the hassle of washing it out does away with all of the good conditioning you were trying to add in. I found this product at my local hair salon and decided to try it on a whim since it offered UV protection for my color treated hair. I love that they use organic ingredients and it passed the ever important smell test. I have to say this product does not dissapoint, I use it once a week, in place of my normal conditioner – it deeply conditions my hair without making it heavy, I’ve noticed my hair is shinier and softer since I started using.

4. Malin+Goetz – Mojito lip balm – I mentioned this in my Friday faves and it is still top of my list – I don’t want to sound like a drone so take my word for it and read my other blog post – it’s awesome!

5.Philosophy – Miracle worker – eye cream – my skin is really sensitive, especially around my eyes, I tend not to stray too far from my routine for fear it will cause major havoc to the under eye or lid. I received this eye cream as part of a set and was hesitant to try it. After a few good weeks with other Philosophy products I gave the eye cream a shot and have been pleasantly pleased with the results. It has a smooth texture, it’s not greasy and so far hasn’t “run” into my eyes. I’ve been using it for a month and have noticed my under eye is less dry – or papery – and the little white dots are disappearing as well.

6. Argan oil – If coconut oil is my go to for everything, Argan oil is my secret weapon. There are a lot of brands out there that claim to be Argan oil – but be careful – most have added ingredients that dilute the oil making it cheaper and inferior to the real thing. Also don’t be fooled by marketing – Argan oil is Argan oil is Argan oil – don’t buy anything fancy or because it’s backed by some celebrity- I get mine from my local Whole Foods Market for $12.99, I’m sure you can find it at other health food stores just make sure it says 100% pure Argan oil. I use it every time after I wash my hair – just on the ends to keep them well moisturized, and on my face after my weekly “at home” facial. I wish I could use it as my daily evening moisturizer but it would get really pricey really fast. Just a pump or two on my hair, face, neck and décolletage keeps everything well moisturized and smooth, and that tiny little bottle lasts about 3 months.

7. Be a Bombshell – the one stick– I got this in my December Ipsy bag, it is a blush, shadow and lip color in one – I was a little skeptical but it’s been a mainstay in my make up bag and when I’m running to a meeting after work it’s the first thing that I reach for, it spruces up my cheeks and doubles as a very subtle lip color.

8. Benefit – fake-up – this is the other mainstay in my bag – I love it – at the end of the day when you look a little tired and your eye liner has migrated to your lower lashes (or lower) this concealer/brightener really does the job at giving you that little extra lift.

Misses –
Aquage – volumizing foam – I’m not giving up on this product yet but I’m not 100% sure this is the right product for my hair. I have very fine straight hair, that does not know the meaning of the word volume. This was suggested by a stylist and I was excited

Alterna Caviar Shampoo/Conditioner – I got a tester set of these from Sephora and wasn’t impressed – the shampoo made my hair feel like straw and the conditioner didn’t bring it back to a happy place – I was really disappointed since I’ve loved all of the other products I’ve tried from them. Ah well such is life.

Thanks for the tips – definitely agree on the coconut oil. I’ve been using it regularly for over a year now. I use it on my face morning and night (as well as everywhere else, and for cooking!). I suggested it one of my friends and she said she would never put oil on her face – she’s missing out! Everyone needs to try it before they knock it 🙂
